In Africa alone, 12.3 million children have been orphaned by AIDS - 82% of the worldwide total. Every 14 seconds, another parent dies of AIDS, leaving behind an orphaned child. The number of AIDS is expected to reach 25 million by 2010.1 Children who are orphaned by AIDS have a greater chance of becoming malnutritioned, than children who have parents looking after them. Most orphans lack the access to food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, or education. These children are likely to suffer much physical and emotional neglect.2
According to recent estimates, the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Lesotho, Southern Africa is about 29%. This is one of the highest rates in the world. That is approximately 1 out of 4 people carrying the HIV/AIDS virus! There is an estimate that this rate will rise to 36% in the next 15 years, resulting in a sharp drop in life expectancy. Recent statistics estimate that the life expectancy is at an average of 36.81 in Lesotho. 3
